All India Guru Nanak Hockey Gold Cup Off to a Colorful start at Khalsa College

The host Khalsa Hockey Academy today beat the rival Steel Plant, Bhilai by whopping 7-0 score today as All-India Guru Nanak Dev Ji Hockey Gold Cup-2019 took off to a colourful start at historic Khalsa College here today. In total four matches were played and in the second match RCF Kapurthala beat Badkhalsa (Haryana) team by 6-0 while in the third match National Hockey Academy (MP) defeated Haryana XI by 4-1 while the fourth match was in progress. 

The Gold Cup is being organized by the Khalsa Hockey Academy under Khalsa College Charitable Society at the historic Khalsa College campus from February 20 to 24. The top hockey teams from across the country are participating in the tourney. Chief Guest at the opening ceremony KCGC honourary secretary Rajinder Mohan Singh Chhina said the tourney is dedicated to Guru Nanak’s 550th Parkash Purab and in total eight national level teams are participating in the event.

 Indian Women Hockey team Captain Rani Rampal who was present said that she was amazed to see the talents amongst the girls. Chhina with Rampal, VC KU, Dr. GS Walia, Principal Dr. Mehal Singh and Sports Director Dr. Kanwaljit Singh presided over the opening and took salute from the march past of the players after hoisting the flag. Fire crackers were fired and balloons blown during the ceremony.

 Chhina said the national game especially for girls needed to be promoted as he congratulated the winner teams and said they were proud to host the tournament. ONGC is the official sponsor of the event. Hockey India coach and Olympian MK Kaushik lauded the efforts being made by the Khalsa College management to promote the game of Hockey and said the tournament should be the annual feature. The other present included Olympian Balwinder Shammi, Physical Education Head Dr.Daljit Singh, Principals of various Khalsa institutions, coaches and team managers.
