With the sole motive to
promote higher education and provide financial assistance to brilliant and
needy students, the Khalsa College management today awarded scholarships to the
tune of Rs. 8.00 lakhs to 80 students from various faculties with of Rs.10,000
to each today. The scholarships are sponsored by the United States based Khalsa
Global Reach Foundation, headed by philanthropist Dr. Bakshish Singh Sandhu,
an alumnus of the historic College.
Dr. Sandhu who studied
pre-medical at the College and later migrated to the US where he earned name as
a doctor had earlier donated Rs.1.00 crore to the management which has pout the
money in the fixed deposits and from the interests earned the scholarships are
paid, said Principal Dr. Mehal Singh. Dr. Sandhu originally hails from border
village of Cheecha Bhakna and had been sponsoring the scholarships to the
students coming from the economically backward strata of society.

Council honourary secretary Rajinder Mohan Singh Chhina said Dr. Sandhu is a
firm believer in the importance of education for the upliftment of the society
and his charity work would help the needy students to continue their education
despite the economic difficulties. He welcomed the noble contribution and
such contributions is an illustration for the society to join hands in
promotion of education for the poor and needy.
Chhina also welcomed the
alumni participation in college management by the way of voluntary
contributions like these which he said has great potentials in nurturing a
culture of mutual respect and jointly pursuing promotion of
education by sharing vision, process, and results. Dr. Mehal Singh said
they have formed the Committee with consultation of Sandhu family which selects
the needy students for these financial help and the money
is transferred to the fee accounts of the students directly in the
banks.
